TLC Gets Final Tenants and a Celebration

The people who helped create ��ϲʿ��ͼ’ first general assignment classroom building in more than 50 years came together on Oct. 4 to celebrate the gleaming new space, including its newest tenants.

“The Teaching and Learning Complex marks a new era for learning at ��ϲʿ��ͼ,” Chancellor Gary S. May told a crowd gathered on the building’s south steps.

What has a 426-seat auditorium, two classrooms with 173 seats each, 20 other classrooms with 37 to 124 seats each, a teaching and learning lab, and one special beam?

The $86 million Teaching and Learning Complex, or TLC: the Davis campus’s first general classroom building in more than 50 years, under construction next to the Silo in the center of campus. Workers recently hoisted the special beam and set it in place in one of the last phases of steel construction for the 101,663-gross-square-foot, four-story structure.

Sign On to the TLC’s ‘Topping-Off’ Event

Some people will be signing in person and everyone is invited to sign online — to be a permanent part of the Teaching and Learning Complex, or TLC, now under construction.

The signatures will be affixed to an 18-foot-long piece of steel tubing that, when put in place, will be a visible part of the building as one of the components of a canopy over the south entry (on the east side of the building). The beam will be the last piece of steel to go up — cause for a “topping-off” event, Tuesday, Aug. 4, and the reason for the signatures.

The steel is going up for the Teaching and Learning Complex, or TLC, a classroom building in the campus core — on the site of Surge IV, between the Silo and The Grove (formerly Surge III).

The TLC, which will provide classroom space in the campus core for approximately 2,000 students, is due for occupancy in the spring of 2022.

Let the construction begin! The campus held a groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday (Oct. 31) for the Teaching and Learning Complex, or TLC, which will provide classroom space in the campus core for approximately 2,000 students. The TLC will occupy the Surge IV site — to be cleared of its collection of old portable buildings — and extend into the parking lot between Surge IV and the Silo.

Groundbreaking Set for Classroom Building

The gold shovels are coming out for the Teaching and Learning Complex, which will provide classroom space in the campus core for approximately 2,000 students.

The four-story building will occupy the Surge IV site — to be cleared of its collection of old portable buildings — and extend into the parking lot between Surge IV and the Silo.

The shoveling will take place during the official groundbreaking Thursday, Oct. 31. The program, including a reception, is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. The campus community is invited.

NEWS BRIEFS: New Academic Building in the Core

Bikes have been removed from a parking area and trees have been taken down on the north side of the Silo — the first signs of a new academic building that is planned in the area. The Teaching and Learning Complex, comprising general assignment classrooms, would occupy the site of the Surge IV collection of old portable buildings, and extend into the parking lot between Surge IV and the Silo.
