Each quarter, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites students to take a break from the stresses of finals to stop in for coffee, hot chocolate and quick snacks like macaroni and cheese or oatmeal. With no in-person finals this quarter, it wasn’t going to happen, which gave the three staffers who organize the event an idea.

Jonathan Eisen: From Aggie Hero to Time

Professor Jonathan Eisen, named the first Aggie Hero of 2019-20 for calling out science meeting organizers for gender and racial imbalance among presenters, last week landed on a Time magazine list of 16 people and groups “fighting for a more equal America.”

The evolutionary biologist “knows he’s an unlikely champion for female representation at scientific conferences,” Time says. “But he also knows someone needs to point out the dearth of women who are speakers at these events.”

Challah for You, Profit for Food Bank

Walking into the Hillel House kitchen in Davis most Thursdays, your senses are overloaded with smells of bread in the oven, and the sounds of giant oven fans and upbeat music, not to mention the chatter among ��ϲʿ��ͼ students.

This is Challah for Hunger, a student organization preparing 40 to 50 loaves of challah (a braided bread), each week generally, to raise money for the Yolo Food Bank.

When the Camp Fire destroyed Paradise last fall, the ��ϲʿ��ͼ Sikh Cultural Association leapt into action, collecting and delivering donations to a Chico shelter, then volunteering at a Salvation Army warehouse.

Those students could be called Aggie Heroes — those who go above and beyond to help and inspire others.

CHANCELL-ING: Closing Campus and Opening Our Hearts

The smoky days of mid-November were unlike anything ��ϲʿ��ͼ had experienced. Lecture halls went silent and bike traffic slowed to a trickle as hazardous pollutants from the horrific Camp Fire in Butte County engulfed the region. The scene of masked faces and orange skies was surreal as we closed our Davis and Sacramento campuses for more than a week.
