Natural Reserves Survive County Fire Untouched

The sky has cleared around several ��ϲʿ��ͼ natural reserves after they spent several days in the shadow of the County Fire.

“Crystal-clear at Cahill today,” due to the wind, reserve steward Paul Havemann said Monday (July 9). He works at Stebbins Cold Canyon Natural Reserve near the Cahill Riparian Reserve.

The County Fire sparked June 30 near Guinda and prompted evacuations of researchers from Stebbins and Quail Creek Natural Reserve. The blaze had covered 90,000 acres and been 80 percent contained as of this morning (July 10), Cal Fire reported.

Stebbins Closed, Other Reserves Take Fire Precautions

One of ��ϲʿ��ͼ’ natural reserves is shut down and two others are taking precautionary measures as the County Fire continues to rage nearby.

Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve, an ecological preserve that also serves as a popular hiking destination, closed two days before the fire started because of “red flag” conditions that include a higher risk of fire. Nearby road closures are now keeping it closed. Both Stebbins and Quail Ridge Reserve are only a few miles away from the southern perimeter of the fire.

Reserve, Vet Med, Fire Crew Respond to Blaze

As the County Fire near Guinda ballooned to more than 44,000 acres over the weekend, ��ϲʿ��ͼ faculty, staff and students not only responded to the fire but also took steps to protect one of the university’s natural reserves and safeguard animals.

Saturday afternoon (June 30), a three-person campus fire crew joined the initial attack on the fire in western Yolo County, and has since returned safely — sent back because other crews had arrived from elsewhere in the state, and officials needed to restore coverage in the rest of Yolo County.
