Deterrence for a Complex World

With heightened tensions among the most powerful countries, the world appears to be sliding into a new Cold War. But with terrorists, anti-government rebels and other non-state forces also threatening international security, is Cold War-style deterrence the best option for preventing conflicts?

The U.S. Department of Defense recently awarded a $1.35 million grant to a ��ϲʿ��ͼ-led team of political scientists to analyze when deterrence works and why it sometimes fails.

U.S. Demographic Change and the Latino Vote,” Mindy Romero, founder and director of the California Civic Engagement Project, will be presenting new research that addresses the frequent question in the media, and by political analysts, of how demographic change in the United States will affect the nation's political landscape. For instance, there is speculation about how Latino population growth will affect the 2016 U.S. elections.

Making Politics Personal

The lessons learned best are often the ones that affect us personally.

Alumnus Kyle Fradkin graduated in 2011, but he still remembers a particular political science assignment where his actions had the potential to impact not only his grade, but those of his classmates.

“Professor Ethan Scheiner asked us to devise our own electoral system to determine when to hold our midterm,” Fradkin recalls. “We picked a type of voting system, argued our positions and ultimately decided our own fate.”
