What FEMA's New Flood Risk Rating Means for Californians

A team of ��ϲʿ��ͼ scientists and flood experts have “reverse engineered” FEMA data regarding the federal agency’s new Risk Rating 2.0 to better understand expected premium changes for California policyholders down to the zip code.

Risk Rating 2.0 will be formally introduced on Oct. 1 and is considered FEMA’s most significant reform to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in 50 years.

Unconventional spaces could be put to use generating renewable energy while sparing lands that could be better used to grow food, sequester carbon and protect wildlife and watersheds, says a study led by the University of California, Davis. Such lands in California's Central Valley could more than meet the state's energy demands for 2025.
