The California Veterinary Emergency Team, led by the ��ϲʿ��ͼ School of Veterinary Medicine, will support and train a network of government agencies, individuals and organizations to aid domestic animals and livestock during emergencies.

The state Emergency Medical Services Authority recently presented a certificate of commendation to the Medical Reserve Corps of ��ϲʿ��ͼ’ Veterinary Emergency Response Team, or VERT, recognizing the corps’ response to the Camp Fire.

The Medical Reserve Corps deployed twice to Butte County in connection with the fire that destroyed the town of Paradise last year. The deployments involved 11 faculty members, two registered veterinary technicians and 81 veterinary students (members of the sVERT Club), all of whom volunteered their time.

The campus continues its efforts to assist victims of the Camp Fire in Butte County, with firefighters on the front lines, thousands of pounds of donations delivered to the fire’s victims, and veterinary personnel treating and seeking the owners of injured or displaced animals.

A ��ϲʿ��ͼ fire crew and a veterinary team spent the long weekend hard at work at the Camp Fire, while back on campus, other firefighters ran a relief effort for the fire victims, and veterinary staff tended to animals brought in from the fire zone.

The School of Veterinary Medicine reported taking in cats, pigs, goats, a donkey and koi — the second time in just over a year the campus has taken in koi from fire zones.

Fire Halted Outside Primate Center’s Fence Line

The ��ϲʿ��ͼ Fire Department joined other fire agencies Thursday afternoon (Nov. 8) in stopping a wind-whipped brush fire short of the university’s California National Primate Research Center off Russell Boulevard west of Highway 113.

The center’s staff evacuated, by order of campus Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht, as firefighters battled the fire that broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Once the center was out of danger, a skeleton crew returned to care for the animals.

Reserve, Vet Med, Fire Crew Respond to Blaze

As the County Fire near Guinda ballooned to more than 44,000 acres over the weekend, ��ϲʿ��ͼ faculty, staff and students not only responded to the fire but also took steps to protect one of the university’s natural reserves and safeguard animals.

Saturday afternoon (June 30), a three-person campus fire crew joined the initial attack on the fire in western Yolo County, and has since returned safely — sent back because other crews had arrived from elsewhere in the state, and officials needed to restore coverage in the rest of Yolo County.
