State Law Expands Eligibility for Peace Officers

A new state law championed by Police Chief Joe Farrow will allow anyone who is legally authorized to work in the United States to become a peace officer in California, regardless of citizenship status, starting Jan. 1.

Previously, police officers had to be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the process of applying for citizenship.

Fire and Police Departments Fill Out Their Ranks

The campus Fire and Police departments have filled out their ranks with seven new hires, including three women who will bring the number of female personnel with the “firefighter” job title to five — equal to the number of men for the first time ever.

“This sets important groundwork for the future,” Chief Nate Trauernicht said, referring to the opportunities the women will have to move up in the ranks, to engineer, captain, assistant chief and chief.

Alumni Return to Campus as Police Officers

Students face some unique pressures, and more and more ��ϲʿ��ͼ police officers know exactly what those students are going through — because they were in their shoes not long ago.

“It feels like just yesterday when I’d be busy all day doing homework or preparing for a final,” officer Dylan Fakhimi said. “Now I walk around and I see other people going through the same thing — I can connect with them.”
