Chancellor Gary S. May Statement on Catastrophic Fires in Lahaina, Hawaii

Chancellor Gary S. May issued the following statement today (Aug. 14).

As Californians, we are no strangers to the danger of wildfires and their impact on our communities. The recent wildfire destruction that ravaged the Lahaina community on Maui is incomprehensible. The loss of life is devastating, and we mourn for the people of Hawaii and the tragic loss of the historic town.

Statement in Response to Blocking of New DACA Applications

A federal judge has blocked new DACA applications. Here at ��ϲʿ��ͼ, we have a dedicated community of undocumented and DACA recipient students from across the globe. These students — many of whom are the first in their families to attend college — contribute to our rich diversity of cultures and perspectives that is integral to our success as a global university. We reiterate our unwavering support for our students. Our students can find resources at the AB540 and Undocumented Student Center.

“I can’t breathe.” These were the last words uttered by Eric Garner as he was being murdered on Staten Island in 2014.

“I can’t breathe.” These were among the last words spoken by George Floyd as he suffered the same fate under hauntingly similar circumstances in Minneapolis on Monday evening.

Many in our community are experiencing another level of uncertainty as we await the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Chancellor Gary S. May issued the following statement today (Oct. 25):

Someone using the presumed pseudonym of “John Smith” has targeted faculty and students in our ethnic studies programs with an email message repeating the message, “It’s okay to be white.” Since the first round of emails, there have been copycat emails sent containing the same message.

The police have been notified, and they are investigating. At least one of the people sending these emails is from out of state.
