��ϲʿ��ͼ Survey Finds 12.2 Percent Apartment Vacancy Rate in City

Apartment vacancies in the city of Davis reached some of their highest rates in more than 40 years as University of California, Davis, students continued with mostly remote studies in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a fall survey released today (Feb. 3).

The blended vacancy rate of 12.2 percent — including apartments leased by the unit and by the bed — compares with 1.0 percent in fall 2019. This is the highest vacancy rate since the report started offering a combined rate for the two types of leases with the fall 2016 survey.

Scrubs Café Reopens, the Silo to Close

One campus eatery, Scrubs Café, has reopened today (June 4), while another is preparing to close for lengthy renovations.

The Silo — including Spokes Grill, Crêpe Bistro, The Gunrock and Peet’s Coffee — will be closed after Friday, June 14, the last day of finals, for construction work, some of it major (new roofing, seismic upgrades), some of it less so (new doors, epoxy flooring in the kitchen). The $2.9 million project is expected to last into early 2020.

New Lecture Hall on the (California Ave.) Block

��ϲʿ��ͼ has a new king of the lecture halls: California Hall, accommodating nearly 600 students, opened Monday morning (Jan. 7) with the start of the winter quarter.

The hall (room number 1100) on California Avenue is surrounded by Hutchison, Asmundson, Kerr, Robbins and Haring halls in the campus core.

The project that began with groundbreaking in June 2016 represents the campus’s first significant addition of classroom space in more than a decade.

Construction Projects Keep Crews Busy Over Summer

The colors have been chosen for the squat racks, windows are going in and soon a crane will lower a large container into the courtyard — a container that will not only be used for storage of outdoor fitness equipment, but is itself a piece of fitness equipment.

Construction at North and East Entries

Construction will start Monday (June 18) on the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard, to make it more inviting and better match the surrounding areas.

The $1.5 million project will add seating, lighting and wi-fi coverage in the area immediately outside the MU. A rain garden, shade trees and other landscaping will soften the area.

Concrete work and other hardscape is scheduled to be completed before fall quarter, with landscaping continuing after that.

After two years of construction, ��ϲʿ��ͼ’ signature lounge is ready to reopen this coming Monday (May 1).

Furniture is going in and crews are putting the finishing touches on the $23.5 million renovation project, which was delayed by surprises like features that didn’t match schematics.

A grand opening event is scheduled for noon Thursday, May 18.

Memorial Union Nearing Completion; Freeborn to Be Renovated

As the finishing touches are being put on the Memorial Union renovation, plans are forming for the future of its northern courtyard and Freeborn Hall.

The MU’s nearly two-year renovation will be complete in the spring, and the building will officially reopen April 3.

“The building will have one cohesive feel, consistent with its original intent,” said Greg Secor, senior project manager with Design and Construction Management.

A House Designed for Drought

A team of ��ϲʿ��ͼ students are tackling the California drought through innovative housing design with their entry for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2017 Solar Decathlon.

The design focuses on cutting typical residential water use in half while maintaining the same level of comfort at an affordable price.
