What’s Killing Sea Otters? Scientists Pinpoint Parasite Strain

Many wild southern sea otters in California are infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, yet the infection is fatal for only a fraction of sea otters, which has long puzzled the scientific community. A study from the University of California, Davis, identifies the parasite’s specific strains that are killing southern sea otters, tracing them back to a bobcat and feral domestic cats from nearby watersheds.

Bringing a Special Sandbox Inside the Classroom

The University of California, Davis, is providing one of its Augmented Reality Sandboxes, or ARsandboxes, to sixth graders at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science in Washington D.C. At least 150 AR sandboxes have been built worldwide since ��ϲʿ��ͼ developed the sandbox and its free, open-source software.

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis’ Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allow users to create virtual topography in real time, make it “rain” and watch where the water flows.
