Statement on Viral Video of ��ϲʿ��ͼ Employee

We are aware of a widely circulated video in which a university employee makes a number of offensive statements. We condemn these statements as deeply hurtful. While the employee’s comments are protected by the First Amendment, they do not reflect the values of respect and belonging that form the foundation of our campus community.

Message Regarding Recent Disruptions to the Academic Mission

This message was sent to ��ϲʿ��ͼ students, faculty and staff today (May 29).

On May 28, the first day of a stand-up strike called by the United Auto Workers, unauthorized individuals entered classrooms and Shields Library on the ��ϲʿ��ͼ campus, disrupting the learning environment and causing discomfort among some students and instructors.

May 15 ��ϲʿ��ͼ Statement on Student Encampment

On Monday, May 13, ��ϲʿ��ͼ leaders met with students representing the encampment, known as PULP (Popular University for the Liberation of Palestine), on the Memorial Union Quad. Campus leaders expressed appreciation for the students’ efforts to keep the encampment safe and peaceful and listened to the students’ concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

��ϲʿ��ͼ leaders said the conversation was productive and that they will continue to engage with the students about issues they are raising.

Report on Heat-Related Primate Death Sent to Regulators

The University of California, Davis, is submitting an external reviewer’s report to federal regulators following the heat-related death of a rhesus macaque after being transported in a university van.

Tulare Lab Facility Closed Due to Flooding

The California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) lab in Tulare has been closed since March 16 due to flooding. ��ϲʿ��ͼ staff have been able to visit the site with the assistance of the Tulare County Office of Emergency Services and local first responders. They are currently assessing damage and planning cleanup efforts.

There is currently no estimate on when the lab will reopen. Clients are being advised to submit samples to other CAHFS locations in Davis, Turlock and San Bernardino.

Report on Mass Fish Death Released

An independent investigation has found that a catastrophic fish mortality event at the ��ϲʿ��ͼ Center for Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture in August 2022 was caused by accumulation of mineral deposits inside sealed piping carrying wastewater away from the facility. This blockage caused chlorine, added to effluent water as a disinfectant, to back up to a water line used to lubricate pumps at the well supplying the fish tanks, and thus contaminate the tanks.

��ϲʿ��ͼ Statement Regarding Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

We are heartbroken as news of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria continues to unfold. ��ϲʿ��ͼ is home to a sizeable community of students and scholars from these countries — currently 38 students and four scholars from Turkey and one student and one scholar from Syria, as well as many students, staff and faculty from the diaspora.

��ϲʿ��ͼ Statement Related to Student Death at Miller Hall

It is with utter sadness that we report that a student died this morning (Jan. 24) at his Miller Hall residence on campus. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and others who knew and loved him. We are grateful for the first responders who were on-scene who did all they could for the student.

Statement on Ting Guo Dismissal

The Board of Regents of the University of California has today (Jan. 19) dismissed Ting Guo from the faculty of ��ϲʿ��ͼ. The regents made their decision at the request of ��ϲʿ��ͼ Chancellor Gary S. May and on the recommendation of UC President Michael Drake, in accordance with university policy.

In summer 2018 the UC Santa Barbara Police Department sent a report to the ��ϲʿ��ͼ Police Department outlining allegations of sexual assault against a ��ϲʿ��ͼ employee. The report indicated that the complainant had explicitly requested that a criminal investigation be completed before the complainant’s name or the respondent’s name were released to the ��ϲʿ��ͼ Office of Compliance and Policy (Title IX office).
