James N. Sanchirico and James E. Wilen are the recipients of the 2023 Publication of Enduring Quality Award from the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. The award presentation took place during the association鈥檚 summer conference in Portland, Maine.

Sanchirico is a professor in the Department of Environmental Policy and Research, and Wilen is a professor emeritus in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Both departments are part of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Their honored paper, 鈥淏ioeconomics of Spatial Exploitation in a Patchy Environment,鈥 published in the Journal of Environmental Economics Management in 1999, was from Sanchirico鈥檚 dissertation, which he completed in the 澳门六合彩开奖结果走势图 Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1998, with Wilen as his adviser.

鈥淭his paper is a transformative contribution that changed the way economists and others see the world,鈥 the award committee said. 鈥淚t did this by laying out a new framework for understanding the role played by space and spatial mechanisms in systems of living organisms. This new framework, in turn, allowed economists to tackle questions about spatial policy issues that had not been addressed before with existing nonspatial paradigms.

鈥淭he paper is notable for the cascade of papers that followed that elaborated and extended the original ideas, applied the framework to other resource systems, and motivated generalizations leading to a new body of theory of spatial-dynamic systems. It is easy to argue that this paper is one of the most significant contributions to emerge in natural resource economics over the last several decades.鈥

According to Sanchirico鈥檚 Googler Scholar page, the 1999 paper has been cited more than 560 times.

The International Parking and Mobility Institute has granted accreditation to Transportation Services, recognizing it for achieving a comprehensive standard of excellence in such areas as customer service, professional development, sustainability and transportation demand management, and safety and security.

says the designation puts the department in the top 30% of municipal, university and airport parking operations nationwide.

鈥淪tarting with the operational pivot to daily choice and the department鈥檚 commitment to innovative and sustainable programming, Transportation Services has helped to improve campus facilities with new technologies and reduce the number of drive-alone campus commuters,鈥 the article says.

鈥淥perational pivot to daily choice鈥 refers to the switch to ParkMobile, whereby people pay daily parking fees as opposed to buying a monthly pass that goes unused when you are working from home.

鈥淎ccreditation is a tribute to each team member鈥檚 hard work and adherence to a set of high standards adopted by our industry,鈥 said Perry Eggleston, executive director of Transportation Services.
